Youth, culture and heritage have become a clear focus for Council, as the Youth Engagement Strategy and the Culture and Heritage Plan come to fruition. These plans will deliver key initiatives of "The Futures Paper 2016-2020" - Council's Community Plan.
In my role as City Councillor and Council's representative for the Youth Advisory Group, I've had the pleasure and honour to have worked alongside staff and young people over the past few months for the Youth Engagement Strategy.
A total of 694 young people in Mount Gambier were spoken with through workshops, roundtable sessions, interviews and surveys - and Council now have a very clear picture of exactly what young people want.
As a result of the consultation, Council now have 17 recommendations to assess and prioritise. The high level key issues include: fit for purpose recreational facilities, engaging with public space, an accessible, welcoming and engaging CBD for young people and creating a sustainable, vibrant and visual youth culture.
It's become clear that youth want to be able to access high quality Wi-Fi, engage with activities in the CBD and participate in public art projects.
I'm incredibly excited to see where things go from here, and have thoroughly enjoyed being involved in really making young people in Mount Gambier a focus.
Council has also explored cultural values and aspirations within the Mount Gambier community to develop another groundbreaking blueprint - the Cultural and Heritage Plan.
“Between May and September 2017, more than 500 people provided input into 31 individual consultation activities which included visioning workshops, surveys, chalk boards, roundtable sessions, targeted engagement interviews, door knocking, community barbecues and industry group meetings,” Cr Frank Morello said.
Key themes in the consultation invluded the preservation and celebration our natural, cultural and heritage assets, an increase in community engagement with cultural activities, further activation within the CBD, and a desire to celebrate what makes Mount Gambier unique.
Councillors will meet tonight to prioritise the recommendations for the landmark Youth Engagement Strategy and Culture and Heritage Plan.
