Council Calls on Artists to Revitalise City's Blank Canvases

(City of Mount Gambier Riddoch Art Gallery Director and Manager of Arts and Culture Dr. Melentie Pandilovski and Arts, Culture and Development Officer Serena Wong)
The City of Mount Gambier is seeking expressions of interest from artists to develop public artworks for the blank walls on James Street near Ripley Arcade, and for the footpaths of Percy Street, in a project aimed at building stronger ties within the community and to revitalise the area.

“We are seeking either emerging artists to propose a mentorship with an established artist, or an established artist to engage groups within the community for a multi-participatory public art project” City of Mount Gambier Riddoch Art Gallery Director and Manager of Arts and Culture Dr. Melentie Pandilovski said.

“The theme, style and materials used for the installation are open to artistic interpretation. Artworks can be permanent, temporary or ephemeral in nature. The final artworks will be highly visible works of high artistic quality.”

Dr. Pandilovski also referred to the community and a connection to the city of Mount Gambier as being an important aspect of the project.

“This project offers an opportunity to embrace a culture of creativity and define and shape landmarks within the city. Bold concepts and novel approaches which reflect and promote the community and/or nurture a community committed to creating a sense of belonging and ownership will be highly regarded.”

Interested artists should respond to the Percy Street and Ripley Arcade Public Art Project Brief available on the City of Mount Gambier website www.mountgambier.sa.gov.au with submissions required by 5:00pm on Monday 23nd October, 2017.
