Flags Fly at Half Mast to Honour Viv Maher

Today, the Aboriginal and Australian flags flew at half mast in the Cave Gardens, as a sign of respect for Aboriginal elder Viv Maher who passed away Wednesday evening following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Viv worked passionately in the region for many years, as a teacher, a social worker and a social activist, among many other things.

City Council held a special meeting of Council following a request from Pangula Manmamurna to fly the flags at half mast. The motion was passed unanimously yesterday afternoon.

Close friend of Viv Maher and City Councillor Penny Richardson summed her up perfectly.

"If there were more Viv Mahers in the world, there would be no need for treaties or social inclusion committees."

Vale Viv Maher.
