Tourism Focus for New MP Troy Bell

Just 4 months after being elected as the Member of Parliament for Mount Gambier, Troy Bell is already well on his way to making a real difference to the community, though he admits that things have been made difficult with his party not being elected for state government.
"It's always easier if you're in government, so the challenge for me is to work with the government and get our fair share in our region. We've got 3 and a half more years in opposition, then hopefully we'll be in government. I'm really disappointed that we didn't get in, because we'll have to fight even harder to get our share stuff down here. But in saying that, Leon Bignell's been great, he's been down here four times since the election.."

Leon Bignell is a South East native, and is the current minister for Tourism in South Australia. Bell is confident that working with Bignell will be beneficial for the area.
Mount Gambier is very well known as a tourist hotspot, with our natural attractions and lush green environment. This is something Bell is passionate about, and something he truly believes we should be capitalising on.
"The problem we've got here is that most of our attractions are free. You walk around the Blue Lake, spend time down at the Valley Lakes area - you haven't spent a cent. Council won't allow anything new down there. The Lakes precinct could be an amazing opportunity for toursim . An upgrade of the walking trails, also cafe facilities where you could be sitting down there with a great big decking overlooking the playground and the water. We need to build every opportunity for people to want to spend money in this city."

Building and capitalising on what we already have to offer is important, but at the same time, Bell believes that bringing another industry to the city would be very beneficial. A factory of some sort opening here would mean extra jobs. We need more reason for families to want to relocate here, to build our population. With the city hitting the popuation threshold of 30,000 - more services would be allocated.
"If you grow your population, you'll also grow your services. Things like mental health, the health facilities that are provided here, he really need to get over that 30,000 threshold. At the moment we're about 4,000 off of that."

Though there are many things happening in the region that Bell is positive about, there are several issues he's making a stand against; most importantly the constant expansions of our prison system - and fracking.
He agrees that as a city, we should do ou fair share in regards to helping out Adelaide in regards to the prison system, but feels there are better things in the city that money could be put towards ugrading.
As far as fracking goes, Bell stands by his passion for the lush natural beauty that this region offers, and doesn't think that fracking operations have a place in the area, and isn't worth risking.

He's just a few months in, but Troy Bell has already proven that he's working hard to build this city, and to listen to the real issues that members of the community have - and work hard in addressing them.
